Shopping

You can shop till you drop in Bali with a wide variety of products at very reasonable prices. Buyers come to Bali from many countries to buy products they export in large quantities and supply major chain stores around the world.

You can buy goods in the shops of the tourist areas or you may wish to go to see the shops in the villages where the products are made. An alternative you might consider is to go to the major art market at Sukawati. This is where most Indonesian visitors to Bali go to buy their souvenirs.

Jewelry

Bali produces world class jewelry which is exported to many parts of the world.

The best known jewelry is silverware most of which is made in the village of Celuk. Celuk is just before Sukawati on the road northEast of Denpasar towardsUbud.

The silver shops line both sides of the main road with the workshops either behind the showrooms or in neighbouring villages.

There is an enormous range of styles but if youi don't find what you are looking for you can always get something made to your design.

Furniture

Bali is an amazing place to buy furniture, There is a lot of teak furniture most of which is made in Java and only finished in Bali.

Teak is becoming harder to get as the government is clamping down on illegal logging activities but there is still furniture around.

There are many shops around Southern Bali. One that is really worth a visit is Tarita which is close to Kuta Galleria on the Bypass. Tarita offers interesting designs and very high quality.

Have a look at the four poster beds.

There are also many rattan and bamboo furniture shops along the sides of the main roads in the Sanur, Jimbaran, Seminyak and Kerobokan areas.

Clothing

Along the streets in the main tourist areas you will find dozens of shops selling tee shirts and baseball caps. You can get tee shirts made up and printed easily in Bali.

Bali is home to a number of major world brand clothing factories. Surfing clothes, sports clothes and shoes, shirts are the main products made here. There is an Animale factory and shop in Kuta on Jalan Imam Bonjol.

You will also find some very high quality shops selling fashions (Paul Ropp is probably the best known) traditional sarongs and kabayas.

Stone Carvings

You may notice that everywhere in Bali there are stone carvings. The stone figures of traditional Balinese characters are easily seen but if you look carefully you will find all sorts of things such as sandstone pillars, garden lamps, wall freezes and planters.

Most of these items can be bought from carvers who sit in their roadside workshops carving.

The best place for stone carvings is along the sides of the road in Singapadu which is north of Denpasar about half way to Ubud on the road to Payangan.

Many are heavy items but the workshops can arrange packing and freight to your home overseas for you.

Handicrafts

All over Bali there are small villages where people make handicrafts. If you can imagine it you can bet your life it is being made somewhere in Bali. Laerherwork, basketwork, wodd carving, bamboo products, bead and neclaces, windchimes, the list goes on and on.

You will find many of these products for sale in shops on the streets in many parts of the tourist areas of Bali. Some supermarkets also sell handicrafts.

A trip north of Denpasar to the east of Ubud and to a village called Tegallalang is probably the best place to go for seriously finding handicrafts. The roads there are lined with shops selling everything you can imagine.

Lace

The Balinese wear beautiful lace for their formal traditional dress. Most notable are their kabayas or traditional blouses.

You can buy lace in many of the traditional clothing shops.

You might also care to visit an Uluwatu shop. Uluwatu are a chain of cotton lace shops around the Island. They sell high quality clothing most of which is white.

Material

There are tailors on virtually everystreet corner so if you don't find what you want you can always get something made up.

The tailor wll have achoice of material but if you wish to find your own the best place to find material is Jalan Sulawesi in the heart of Denpasar where literally wall to wall material shops line both side of quite a long street.

For commercial purposes probably the best material supplier is Namada Textile on Jalan Imam Bonjol.

Ceramics

Pottery is sent all over the world from Bali. Much of it is manufactured in Lombok or in Yogyakarta. Most is terracotta and comes a wide array of designs such as urns bowls and large pots.

there are shops elling such pottery in many parts of the island. Just beware that much of this pottery is fired at low temperatures which means it is generally not very strong and is not water tight. This is not due to poor quality - this is the traditional style of pottery from this region and is, as I said, popular all over the world.

In Jimbaran near Kuta is a verty high class ceramic factory called Jengala. They have a large showroom full of some wonderful ceramics. They also have a cafe and an activities centre for the children. It is well worth a visit.

Paintings

Bali is famous for its painters. Traditional Balinese art is particularly special. The centre for painting is Ubud and the village around it.

If you like paintings then Ubud is an essential place to visit. There are many art galleries and art shops in the area.

Department Stores

Bali has a number of department stores. These are situated in Kuta, Kuta galleria and in Denpasar. Generally speaking the prices are slightly lower in Denpasar.

The main department stores are Matahari, Ramayana and Robinsons. The new Discovery mall in Jalan Kartika Plaza in Kuta is the newest main shopping centre on the island.

Duty Free
Duty Free is available at several locations on the bypass in Kuta. The best known are the Bali Plaza and the Galleria.
